Saltaire Changes Rigid Bike Riding Law - Temporarily

NIGHT BIKE RIDING NOTICE

The Board of Trustees has decided to permit

Nightime Bicycle Riding during the summer of 2006

only on the following walks within the village

Lighthouse Promenade

Bay promenade Broadway

Nighttime bike riding remains prohibited on all other walks

Every rider must use a mounted or hand held light

Every rider must drive carefully and observe speed limited

Ring Bell as a warning and at every intersection

VIOLATERS WILL BE ISSUED A SUMMONS AND BE PROSECUTED

The board may at any time modify or revoke this permission

which is for the 2006 season only

A big step for Saltaire, a small step for mankind...and its temporary

Shortly after 9/11 a recently retired firefighter, who was called back to duty 9/11 and was also spending much of his free time attending memorials, was trying to visit me in Kismet from Ocean Beach. After completing most of the difficult journey on bike

he was stopped by a Saltaire cop and fined $75. It was in November, way after the season when there was hardly anyone around and he was trying to get to Kismet before dark. He reluctantly explained that he had no other way to get to Kismet, he had no idea biking was outlawed, and that he was a NYFD, which in the real world would have immediately inspired admiration and thanks in a mutual camaraderie that was forged during this difficult time between the NYPD & NYFD.

The citizen cop was unmoved and fined the man anyway - not even a warning!
