KISMET KOLUMN LABOR DAY EDITION

Welcome to the first ever Labor Day weekend coverage of the Kismet Kolumn!

And the first ever within memory lousy-est Labor Day weekend weather.

2006    KAYE KISMET  KLASSIK
Krazy Doubles

Tennis fans were deprived as both Kismet Kracked Koncrete Klassic, as we knew it,  and the US Open. As in the US Open, the Kismet tennis tourney was rained out till both resumed Sunday and Monday and thanks to the alacrity of the players and Joe Barbosa's on the moment organizing the tourney finished by 1pm Monday, in time for most to go home as planned.

Joe& Joanie McK, out of it this year, "moving on", but Joe claimed to be the  Jimmy Connors of Kismet taking full credit for coaching the winner, Sam.Jr. "I told him it was not about just returning the ball but killing the opponent" and he did! Of course, Sam Sr, in a rare moment when he was not working also claimed credit "thank goodness I gave him tennis lessons".

No doubt about it this was the first year the next generation played a major/equal part in the tourney - a force to reckon with. The acceptance of the next generation, Craig, Alex, Nick, Sam Jr (remember last year when Jerry S quit in protest over them? This year he had to play on the same team with them .some say they helped him!) brought "newblood" into the match as less disgruntled veteran players conceded AND certainly brought louder and plentiful cheering sections - the MM's being the loudest as they cheered on Craig and Alex, the Licari's et famille cheering on Nick, and the Flower Ladies, sipping mimosas, reconvened for Sam Jr - most spectacularly luring Sam Wood away from work though NOT UNTIL Jr. had a chance to actually win!

Advil was the drug of choice for the vets - Nancy loading up a la Agassi before tourney, Gary suggesting "Advil would be good right now" after taking a spectacular (and graceful) head over heels somersault chasing a ball. Artie G, playing  better than ever with a new hip (bonded with 14 year old Alex saying he was making him look good) proudly claimed "Nancy got her mojo back" playing less than 3 weeks after a year off due to injuries.

Visiting Earl Beer was bribed NOT to play. Even Warren's birthday couldn't save him - (age to be determined).

The longest match was between Jane/Phylis vs Nancy/Ellen. Steve, after losing an early one, (the only one from the MM's to be up that early) said "I'm taking these balls home, I earned them for getting up at 8AM"

In men's finals Joe B and Herb in matching blue/black outfits (but Joe had the knee brace) vs Sam Jr and Dean (a ringer from Fair Harbor), the clarion call "Oh, Barbosa" ringing out as the old bull finally succumbed to the young bull.

Joe presented the award to the Ladies finalists saying "from the unworthy to the worthy" (Carole got her belated trophy from last year as well) Roz, who was responsible for getting the trophys and designing this years' tourney shirts, awarded the men, mentioning  "passing the tournament on to a new generation". Personally, enough is enough - I was glad to see only one kid on the winners' circle!
