The Heavens ultimately wept on our country's birthday but just a drizzle teased the queens as the boarded the "Tropical Banana Boat " on their annual journey from the Grove to the Pines and whatever fireworks were obscured later that night exploded in a riot of color we've come to expect on the other anniversary of the day when Grove queens, refused admittance in the Pines for violating the non drag dress code, inspired by watching the Tall Ships in the harbor for the country's bicentennial in l976, decided on an invasion of their own.

This time there were 292 participants on the ferry, the second largest in history, now greeted by 3500 spectators according to police reports at the very community that declined them those many years ago. The event was dedicated to Violet Silver.

This is also the first time the event had corporate sponsorship, Malibu Banana Rum, who named the ferry and reportedly turned down the opportunity to have Darryl represent them in his spectacular Carmen Miranda costume for a more generally acceptable image - those scantily clad Banana Boys - (did they think they were less gay?).

The event has grown in such stature that there were at least two film crews working on separate documentaries, one for PBS., the other from a local company, tracing Bella's every step from start till shoes off.
