MISS FIRE ISLAND ‘08

It was a tough year for the popular event, especially for Sal Piro culminating his first year as General Manager of the Ice Palace. Hurricane Hannah was rolling up the East Coast and Fire Island was in her path. What to do? Boat Basins were suddenly empty as otherwise attendees fled home. The Ferry service announced Friday its intention to suspend service if necessary on Saturday and water taxis, of course, were the first to bail. What to do? The Ice Palace decided to postpone the annual event to Sunday, with the storm safely passed. But even then the always iffy water taxies left nothing but a recording on the morning of the event that they were “evaluating the situation, please call back at 11AM”!!!
Nevertheless the event came off in
flying colors, but with less than capacity crowds. Too bad since the bevy of
beauties, after all their hard work and expense, with nary a no-show, were as
gorgeous as ever. A big thank you to them for their perseverance.
Faced with the hard choice of judging
these darlings of the drag world were: myself, Jeannie Lieberman, beloved Grove
Icons Charity, the
second Miss FI ('68), the oldest
living Miss FI ('69) Rita George, and Sybil Bruncheon plus Sal Piro’s sister Lillias, Pines’ Valerie Perez, Kenny Holcomb and, as always,
Dennis McConkey the tally judge.
The contest was dedicated to the memory
of Peter “Cher” Taylor, Entertainer of the Year 1994
