A WILD WEEKEND IN KISMET: KRAWL, KRACKED KONCRETE & BLOCK PARTY, SAND KASTLES

KISMET HOUSE KRAWL 08

Photos by Jeannie

This established tradition has become one of the most anticipated, creatively planned for and popular annual event of Kismet’s summer – in the past it has usually encompassed around seven houses with unique themes from Catholic Girls School to a wedding chapel, a hospital emergency room to a gambling casino with fake money black jack tables and even a real crap table. Each house decorated appropriately, house members in character, music, décor and even drinks matched the mode. As the Krawl progresses from house to house the crowd grows and along the way others were always welcome to join in. Until this year.

Easy Inn’s Dom, now its titular organizer, reacted to the potential liability of underage drinkers joining in, houses being trashed and general pandemonium by the time they reached the last house. I personally was unaware of these problems being in awe of the creativity and enthusiasm of the participants, but Dom insisted that it be a private party, with admission bracelets distributed in advance, the number was limited to three houses, Brown Sugar, Bananas, and Easy Inn. The date chosen by everyone’s availability was kept in such secrecy that Dom even lied to me, among many, as to its existence at all. It was also problematic as Labor Day weekend conflicted with the annual Seabay Block Party which caused those houses on Seabay to drop out and was perhaps influential in canceling BVT’s BLT (Black Tie & Lingerie) Party.

Nevertheless it was a great event, incredible fun for those attending and Dom observed that “this is the way we wanted it - friends entertaining friends, not so crowded that you couldn’t get into your own bathroom”.

First on the list was Brown Sugar where it was New Year’s Eve. Amidst the balloons and c confetti celebrants serving champagne were: their leader Mack, Eileen, Mike Z, Rockman, Patti Ann, Joe, Sing Sing, Tio, Mary, Megan, Karen and Genevieve.

KISMET TENNIS TOURNEY 08

It was a hot, buggy day for the Bob Kaye Annual Kracked Koncrete Tennis Tourney. All sorts of stratagem were employed by an alarming influx of “ringers” from the outer communities. Fair Harbors Dave L. paired with young Alex  vs. said “he’s gonna carry me vs Nicky L who I am hoping will be tired from his morning football practice” Arty W and Gary plated vs 2 Fair Harbor Ringers Said Artie “It was a tough game and I left it all on the court – they were up 2 games and we took’em” (but he won the tourney anyway with Mitch “we were the underdog vs Barbosa and Nick L”) Linda L by common consent “has the best eye”. Nicky’s dad Tom suggested the following categories for awards: The Brightest Teeth, The Young & the Super Old and Disabled, Best Excuses for F—g Up, Jerry O, Phil L & Art G for Most Complaints and Greg P who showed up “in a class by himself”.

Thanks to Bob & Gerri of Paradoz for the tent on a hot and buggy day

Nevertheless our denizens and sports enthusiasts showed up in their most authentic outfits

Mosse, in her other role as spectator, in a charming sundress by TJMax

Warren stepped out from behind his apron with hat by Head, Shorts & Shirt by Fila “I wear whatever they give me”

Another player-turned-spectator, Joanie McK in a dress by Spiegel Sportsworks, Glasses by Target

Tennis Ace Carol B in a coordinated outfit by Tail, specs by Nike

Gary set the fashion bar high in the most expensive outfit: Nike shoes &n shirt, Sports Authority shorts, glasses by Ray ban

Cheryl, proving less is more, in mix ‘n match bikini separates

Gracie & Nicky wear whatever young people wear….

Binnie, top by Second Hand Rose, skirt by Underarmour, jewelry by Tiffany. Phyllis in Nike,

Fran in Madison Avenue street fair gear, glasses by a street vender/Joanne Sports Authority Special/glasses by Bolle

Jay in a charming meld of Gap, Hat by K Mart, glasses by Walgreen’s

Hat imported from out of state

Joanne and Nancy “All Nike All the Time”

Phil, always chic on basic black: Shirt by Covington/shorts by Fila

The ever fashionable Robin with a statement of her own: practical.

The women found refuge from the upper deck of Outback

Steve, NuBalance Shoes, Nila Shirt,, Lee, New Balance shies, Shorts by Nike, glasses Bolle, Joe McK all “vintage” shirt Old Navy, glasses Tommy Hilfiger

Then it got REALLY Buggy per Summer Wind’s Bruce

And devoted mom, Debbie

Oh, by the way Phyllis & Jane beat Binnie & Nancy on a major upset.

But the Winners of the Women’s Doubles were Jane B and Michelle from  F.H.

Who beat Phyllis & Lea (a Salteen)

Barbosa, Nick L, Mitch, a Fair Harbor guest, and Arty W in Men’s finals

Winners: Mitch Rieders & Art W which proves youth and experience cannot trump experience & experience!

This picture has no news value except that of sentiment.

SEABAY BLOCK PARTY ‘08

Having arrived late from the House Krawl I thank the following correspondents for their input……..

From Andrea: The band is Misspent Youth-John, Bob, Jim & Barney.  Everyone enjoyed them so much, we asked them to stay for an extra set and put them on a water taxi.  I was also asked to book them for next year.  I received the following email from them:

Hey Andrea and Pete,

Just wanted to let you guys know that we really had a great time last night!

Anytime you need a band to play just let us know and we'll be there.

Really appreciated the way you took care of us. Thanks for everything!

John

Thanx to Andy & Paul from the Kismet Market for storing the kegs & loaning us their cart to transport the band.  Thanx, also, to the Inn for their cart.

Cartoon Alley, RP, Avalon, Sunset, Pool House, Risqué Business, and Way Way Yonder all kicked in money for the beer, food & expenses.  George Jacob paid for the band.  Carole Thomas cooked all the food w/the assistance of Bradlee, Marilyn & others.  Avalon made the Jello shots.  Pete Schmidt (CA) set up the area for the band.  Pete S., D.R. Peter, Rich, & George (all from C.A.) helped get the band and their equipment from the dock.  The Baker family donated their land and electric for the band and helped clean up the next day.  Joe Beck weeded his flower bed and collected money.  (Uncle) Phil Licetti & Pia got the kegs from the freight boat & with Joe's help (finally!), from the Market to the block.  I booked the band, got the food, secured the permit, and ordered the kegs when it all got dumped in my lap with less than 2 weeks to go.  Joe Beck & Blind Bobby tortured me over the beer (which FINALLY got ordered 2 days before the event), and generally complained about everything!  Pete S. & I got the band to the water taxi and cleaned up while everyone else went to the bar.  At 7:30 am, I went out & cleaned the street to make sure there was no debris left lying around.

Thanx to the entire Kismet community for helping to make this the best block party yet.  We look forward to making next year's party even better. a full town party was attended by well over 300 people, and had free beer and a live band!

Received the following emails so far:
From Marie & Bob from Sunset:
Hi Andrea,

You did an amazing job pulling the block party together.  It turned out to be a terrific night for everyone, thanks to your effort!

M & B
Yeah, the food went fast.  We had more than double from last year and it still went fast.  That reminds me; please thank Jimmy (Mo-Mo) Wilde from Way Way, for getting 80 hot dogs plus all the ice he could get his hands on.  I bought 120 hot dogs and 80 hamburgers, plus rolls for all.  Usually, we only had 80-120 hot dogs.  With George donating the band's fee, I figured we had extra money in the budget for food and it still wasn't enough.  I couldn't sleep that night-my mind just couldn't wind down-so, while it was fresh in my mind, I made notes on what went well & what needs to be changed for next year.  Obviously, more food & beer is at the top of the list, but I have a few interesting ideas to make next year's event the best block party ever.  Stay tuned! 8-)
